The majority of Dutch physicians feel pressure when dealing with a request for euthanasia or physician-assisted suicide. This study aimed to explore the content of this pressure as experienced by general practitioners. We conducted semistructured in-depth interviews with 15 Dutch GPs, focusing on actual cases. The interviews were transcribed and analysed with use of the framework method. Six categories of pressure GPs experienced in dealing with EAS requests were revealed: emotional blackmail, control and direction by others, doubts about fulfilling the (...) criteria, counterpressure by patient’s relatives, time pressure around referred patients and organisational pressure. We conclude that the pressure can be attributable to the patient–physician relationship and/or the relationship between the physician and the patient’s relative, the inherent complexity of the decision itself and the circumstances under which the decision has to be made. To prevent physicians to cross their personal boundaries in dealing with EAS request all these different sources of pressure will have to be taken into account. (shrink)

ABSTRACTAt present, the consequences and functions of experiences of shame are not yet well understood. Whereas psychology literature typically portrays shame as being bad for social relations, motivating social avoidance and withdrawal, there are recent indications that shame can be reinterpreted as having clear social tendencies in the form of motivating approach and social affiliation. Yet, until now, no research has ever put these alternative interpretations of shame-motivated behaviours directly to the test. The present paper presents such a test by (...) studying the extent to which shame motivates a preference for social withdrawal versus a preference for social approach. Two studies using different shame inductions both showed people experiencing shame to prefer to be together with others over being alone. While theorists of epistemic injustice often refer to Gayatri Spivak’s “Can the Subaltern Speak” as an early articulation of the field’s concerns, they have stopped short of engaging deeply with Spivak’s deconstructive take on epistemic violence and her suggestion that this consists in an attribution of subjectivity to historically marginalized speakers. In redressing this oversight, this article makes a case for adopting a broader conception of epistemic harm and exclusion than has been acknowledged in the literature: I argue that the (...) presumption that speakers are subjects can precipitate silencing. For in determining the other who speaks as a subject, one forecloses hospitality to an alterity not already understood according to the subject/object distinction central to Western metaphysics. This deconstructive intervention thus challenges one of the field’s key assumptions, namely, that epistemic harm consists in a failure to treat speakers as subjects, and consequently that generating a more inclusive dialogical climate depends on restoring marginalized individuals to subject status. Folding Spivak’s deconstructive insight into the remedial project of epistemic justice is therefore far from straightforward; nonetheless, I argue that it is consistent with the literature’s demand for a heightened sensitivity vis-à-vis the ways marginalized others are routinely harmed in epistemic practices. Objectives To evaluate whether the requirement of “minimal risk and burden” for paediatric research without direct benefit to the subjects compromises the ability to obtain data necessary for improving paediatric care. To provide evidence-based reflections on the EU recommendation that allows for a higher level of risk. Design and setting Systematic analysis of the approval/rejection decisions made by the Dutch Central Committee on Research involving Human Subjects (CCMO). Review methods The analysis included 165 proposals for paediatric research without direct benefit (...) that were reviewed by the CCMO between January, 2000, and July, 2007. A separate, in-depth analysis of all drug studies included 18 early phase drug studies and nine other drug studies without direct benefit. Results 11 out of 165 studies were definitively rejected because the CCMO did not regard the risk and/or burden to be minimal. In three of these 11 cases (including two early phase drug studies) the requirement of minimal risk and burden was cited as the only reason for rejection. Four other early phase drug studies also involved risks and/or burdens that were not regarded to be minimal but were nevertheless approved. Conclusions The requirement of minimal risk and burden, aiming to protect research subjects, occasionally leads to rejection of protocols. Early phase drug studies relatively often do not comply with the requirement. Committees may find ways to approve important studies that formally should be rejected, but that is not a desirable solution. The regulatory framework should be revised to make such occasional exceptions to the requirement legitimate and transparent. (shrink)

This article examines the role of the imagination in Fanon's and Husserl's work in order to rethink Fanon's relationship with Husserlian phenomenology. I begin with an investigation of the oft-overlooked ways in which the imagination appears in Wretched of the Earth. Here, I argue that Fanon puts a great deal of stock in the imagination, ultimately calling upon this faculty in order to presage the novel ways of being, thinking, and acting, which are a recurrent signature of his vision of (...) decolonization. In the latter half of the article, I then offer an account of the decisive methodological significance of the imagination within Husserl's work. Revisiting the methodological infrastructure of phenomenology with Fanonian concerns in mind casts Husserl's project in a surprising new light, bringing to the fore the revolutionary potential of both the epoché and the method of eidetic variation. For at the core of Husserlian methodology lies a resolve to exceed the limits of our present empirical reality—a leitmotiv of Fanon's own thinking. I ultimately show that Fanon's work can thus be imagined as a reactivation, indeed a revolution, inaugurated at the heart of phenomenology and its most basic methodological commitments. (shrink)

Husserl has often stood accused of Eurocentrism given his disquieting coupling of philosophy as universal science with Europe. And yet, however much this accusation has clouded the appeal of transcendental phenomenology, the nature of this charge remains obscure: whether Husserl’s chauvinism is merely a personal opinion punctuating his writing or is instead closely connected to the methods of phenomenology has been left unexplored. This paper offers itself as a corrective, looking to get a clearer picture of how precisely Eurocentrism afflicts (...) transcendental phenomenology. The overarching aim of doing so is to chart the possibilities for the development of a non-Eurocentric, decolonial phenomenological thinking which exploits the enduring appeal of Husserl’s commitment to presuppositionlessness. The first part of the paper considers the relationship between the phenomenological reduction and eidetic variation, showing that, by Husserl’s own lights, phenomenological science seeks to expel all forms of prejudice. Part two, however, shows that the entrance of Eurocentrism into phenomenology is not simply accidental, in two distinct senses. The first, which takes off from Merleau-Ponty’s (implicit) critique of Husserl, argues that Husserl in his late work is insufficiently attentive to the empirical dimension: Eurocentrism thus stems from the overly transcendental emphases of this project and its inability to engage with concrete human diversity. The second draws on Derrida’s (explicit) critique of Husserl, arguing that it is precisely the admission of concrete historico-cultural facts into phenomenology that compromises the universal by identifying it with the particularities of Europe. I thus show that Eurocentrism does indeed insinuate itself in Husserl’s methods—_not_, however, in a manner that renders transcendental phenomenology irredeemable. Given the opposition between these two insightful criticisms, however, I argue that the challenge for a decolonial vision of phenomenology is formidable. (shrink)

Several versions of the dot probe detection task are frequently used to assess maladaptive attentional processes associated with a broad range of psychopathology and health behavior, including eating behavior and weight. However, there are serious concerns about the reliability of the indices derived from the paradigm as measurement of attentional bias toward or away from salient stimuli. The present paper gives an overview of different attentional bias indices used in psychopathology research and scrutinizes three types of indices calculated from a (...) pictorial version of the dot probe task to assess food-related attentional biases in children and youngsters with and without obesity. Correlational analyses reveal that dynamic scores are dependent on general response speed. Reliability estimates are low for the traditional and probability indices. The higher reliability for the dynamic indices is at least partially explained by general response speed. No significant group differences between youth with and without obesity are found, and correlations with weight are also non-significant. Taken together, results cast doubt on the applicability of this specific task for both experimental and individual differences research on food-related attentional biases in youth. However, researchers are encouraged to make and test adaptations to the procedure or computational algorithm in an effort to increase psychometric quality of the task and to report psychometric characteristics of their version of the task for their specific sample. Já tivemos a oportunidade de colocar, após uma reflexão sobre a Geografia, o que inclui necessariamente o ensino, pois, o seu prestígio resulta de sua institucionalização escolar, que caberia a nós, professores de Geografia, a elaboração de um contra-discurso. Se falamos em contra-discurso, é porque sentimos a necessidade de mudança na maneira como se ensina tradicionalmente a Geografia. Lacoste é claríssimo: de modo geral, a Geografia escolar (e os respectivos livros didáticos) se limita (m) a “ensinar sem compreender”. Ou seja, (...) os alunos são obrigados a estudar esta disciplina mesmo sem compreendê-la. Evidentemente, isso não faz sentido, considerando-se que ela deveria – e pode, efetivamente – contribuir decisivamente para uma compreensão crítica de realidade, por parte do educando. Porém, a necessidade de um contra-discurso geográfico advém do seguinte: o discurso geográfico, seja o veiculado pelos meios de comunicação, o dos professores, é essencialmente ideológico. Nossas atenções se voltam especificamente para o discurso escolar, ideológico no sentido de que lhe coube, historicamente, “passar” a ideia de pátria. Quilombo designa uma herança cultural e material tendo como referência presencial o sentimento de pertencimento a um lugar e à formação de um novo grupo social, pois não são definidos somente como espaço de resistência guerreira, mas também como representantes de recursos radicais de sobrevivência em grupo. No entanto, há uma desqualificação histórica que tem estigmatizado as comunidades quilombolas, o que contribui para as dificuldades de acesso a bens e serviços, gerando desigualdades, propulsoras de adoecimento que persistem até os dias (...) atuais, constituindo-se como condicionantes da saúde. Ao se considerar que a saúde representa um dos direitos básicos dos direitos humanos, um direito indissociável ao direito à vida, esta reflexão tem por objetivo apresentar e problematizar o papel do Estado Brasileiro na garantia da promoção da saúde da população quilombola, no que se refere mais diretamente às políticas públicas no âmbito da saúde. Para tanto, este trabalho é dividido em 4 parte: (i) buscou-se problematizar a importância da revisão histórica do conceito colonial sobre quilombo com efeitos político-jurídicos-sociais para o acesso à saúde pelas comunidades quilombolas; (ii) na segunda parte são apresentadas algumas noções de saúde ligadas as comunidades quilombolas; (iii) na terceira parte são apresentadas as ações do Movimento Negro Brasileiro na mobilização pelos direitos à saúde dos povos quilombolas; e (iv) são apresentadas as políticas públicas implementadas. This article aims to analyze the work Mal-entendido em Moscou, by Simone de Beauvoir from to specific themes: the aging and the finitude. The book tells the story of André and Nicole, two retired professors who feel the weight of aging and travel to the USSR for the second time in their life. Thus, a series of misunderstandings start taking place: the lack of communication, the fear of aging, a long-standing love, the assumption of female identity, their political expectations and (...) the difference between the characters’ comprehension of the world itself. In this text, I address these divergences, especially the impact of aging and the realization of finiteness by the main character and how these matters of uneasiness reverberate in all of us as well. The article is subdivided as follows; first it deals in general with the relationship between philosophy and literature in Beauvoir's production; the following presents the plot of the work, highlighting some important elements for the discussion and; finally, it investigates questions about aging and facticity, seeking to understand the original focus that the philosopher outlines in the courageous and realistic creation that she makes of her characters. This text discusses and makes a statement about theoretical appropriations of Nietzsche’s philosophy, according to different, and often opposite, political positions that brought them about. Then a reading of Nietzsche that emphasizes, from the criticism to nationalism, dogmatism and ethnic, cultural or political identity’s stiffness, his esteem for an agonistic politics is defended. Such reading would now allow us a Nietzschean defence of democratic political practices characterized by respect to difference, antagonism and conflict.

BackgroundPreprint usage is growing rapidly in the life sciences; however, questions remain on the relative quality of preprints when compared to published articles. An objective dimension of quality that is readily measurable is completeness of reporting, as transparency can improve the reader’s ability to independently interpret data and reproduce findings.MethodsIn this observational study, we initially compared independent samples of articles published in bioRxiv and in PubMed-indexed journals in 2016 using a quality of reporting questionnaire. After that, we performed paired comparisons (...) between preprints from bioRxiv to their own peer-reviewed versions in journals.ResultsPeer-reviewed articles had, on average, higher quality of reporting than preprints, although the difference was small, with absolute differences of 5.0% [95% CI 1.4, 8.6] and 4.7% [95% CI 2.4, 7.0] of reported items in the independent samples and paired sample comparison, respectively. There were larger differences favoring peer-reviewed articles in subjective ratings of how clearly titles and abstracts presented the main findings and how easy it was to locate relevant reporting information. Changes in reporting from preprints to peer-reviewed versions did not correlate with the impact factor of the publication venue or with the time lag from bioRxiv to journal publication.ConclusionsOur results suggest that, on average, publication in a peer-reviewed journal is associated with improvement in quality of reporting. They also show that quality of reporting in preprints in the life sciences is within a similar range as that of peer-reviewed articles, albeit slightly lower on average, supporting the idea that preprints should be considered valid scientific contributions. Este artigo propõe considerações sobre o conceito de experiência [Erfahrung] a partir do texto Experiência e Pobreza, de Walter Benjamin, publicado em 1933, no qual o intelectual alemão desenvolve argumentos relacionados à experiência e à cultura observando o desenvolvimento tecnológico a partir da modernidade do século XIX, e sugere que haveria um “empobrecimento da experiência”, fazendo referência ao que chama de “cultura de vidro”. Articula-se essa leitura ao que tem sido chamado de “cultura de telas” - momento em que a (...) tecnologia exige contato permanente com as telas dos dispositivos eletrônicos que se tornam, cada vez mais, extensões do corpo e da mente humanos. Ao final, fornece observações que permitem propor novas perspectivas sobre um suposto “empobrecimento” ou surgimento de novas formas de experiência a partir do uso desses dispositivos. (shrink)

Este estudo pretende discutir essa relação aproximando-a do terreno da Educação Ambiental. Desse modo num primeiro momento o texto situa a modernidade e a racionalidade; num segundo, apresentar a contribuição de Habermas sobre a temática e finalmente busca fazer algumas aproximações com Enrique Leff a partir do conceito de racionalidade ambiental. Interessa-nos também nessa parte buscar compreender em que (...) medida a acepção de racionalidade ambiental pode contribuir em nossas práticas educativas no contexto da extensão universitária. O presente artigo pretende explicar como Meinecke e Cassirer entendem o maquiavelismo de Hegel enquanto a ‘legitimação de um bastardo’, estabelecendo um forte ponto de concordância no plano histórico-interpretativo ao reconhecerem um mesmo processo histórico, que se inicia com Maquiavel, passa pela teoria do Direito Natural dos séculos XVII e XVIII, e finaliza com Hegel. Para tanto, recorre-se a uma reconstrução e comparação de momentos relevantes de _O mito do Estado _, de Cassirer, e de _A ideia de Razão de (...) Estado na história moderna _, de Meinecke. Por fim, busca-se explicitar que, apesar de haver concordância quanto ao plano histórico-interpretativo do maquiavelismo de Hegel entre Meinecke e Cassirer, a valoração ético-política dada por estes intérpretes a este processo histórico é distinta em se considerando a crítica de Cassirer à _Lebensphilosophie _quanto ao seu potencial de resistência ao fascismo_. _. O Espiritismo surgiu a partir do trabalho de um francês, Hippolyte-Léon Denizard Rivail, que analisou os fenômenos mediúnicos. A Sociedade Parisiense de Estudos Espíritas (SPEE) foi fundada em 1858, com o objetivo de estudar todos os fenômenos relativos às manifestações espíritas. O nosso objetivo é: investigar a importância que a Sociedade teve no processo de formalização e institucionalização do estudo das manifestações espirituais; analisar o seu papel na elaboração, desenvolvimento, uniformização e consolidação do Espiritismo, à época de Allan Kardec. Utilizamos (...) basicamente fontes primárias: as obras produzidas por Kardec entre 1857 e 1869 e outros manuscritos inéditos. Analisarmos essa documentação, para compreender como e porque se deu a fundação da SPEE, o critério de inclusão/exclusão dos membros, as atividades desenvolvidas e como eram trabalhadas as comunicações mediúnicas recebidas na Sociedade e fora dela, dentro do processo de elaboração do Espiritismo. Concluímos que a SPEE teve um importante papel no processo de elaboração e consolidação do Espiritismo na época de Kardec. Ela se constituiu num espaço de obtenção das comunicações mediúnicas, de debate das informações atribuídas aos espíritos, de elaboração das obras publicadas, instrução para os espíritas, de proposição de um modelo de conduta a ser seguido pelos demais grupos espíritas, de padronização das atividades mediúnicas e da conduta dos médiuns. The reflection on the theology of Puebla exposes two theological tendencies present in the assembly and in the final document. The first tendency of a classical matrix rests on an essentialist view of reality. The second is structured from the historicity and has its final elaboration in the category signs of the times, consecrated by the Council. The theological batlle results in the conclusive text of Puebla and expresses the batlle for the meaning of Vatican II. Nevertheless, this hermeneutic batlle, (...) the reception of the Third Conference will take place in a historical and liberating perspective in continuity with the consolidated tradition of the Medellin Conference. The current historical context is a presupposition that reaffirms the current relevance of the teachings of Puebla. The reflection starts from the historical possibilities of Puebla's realization, verifies the internal struggle for the meanings of Vatican II and Medellín that occurred within the process and concludes with the presentation of the Conference receptions. Objetiva-se, com o presente trabalho, apontar as diferenças entre o resultado de interpretação judicial e o ativismo judicial, cujas soluções são, respectivamente, a criação do Direito e a criação de direitos. As expressões estão diferentemente grafadas para vinculá-las a comportamentos distintos: "do Direito”, refere-se à regra extraída da ordem jurídica, enquanto "de direitos”, diz respeito a direitos subjetivos (reais ou ideais). O método utilizado foi o dialético, a partir da revisão bibliográfica e pesquisa jurisprudencial, com enfoque na criação jurisdicional, cujo (...) resultado permite constatar as diferentes realidades decorrentes da escolha do juiz, quando da prestação jurisdicional. Nos discursos das mulheres sobre maternidade, segundo escolaridade e raça/etnia, observa-se que se articulam posicionamentos discursivos diferenciados. Como tendência geral há uma aproximação de discursos relacionados a “constructos sociais modernos” sobre maternidade, característicos da modernidade. Constatamos diferenças nos discursos que destacam o grupo de mulheres negras de ensino médio dos demais grupos de escolaridade. É neste grupo de mulheres que são enfatizados, com maior recorrência, aspectos discursivos relativos às concepções “essencialistas” da maternidade, ou seja, naturalizados, rompendo a tendência de progressiva (...) “dessencialização”, à medida que se eleva a escolaridade das mesmas. As diferentes concepções de maternidade apresentadas, por mulheres negras e brancas, permitem-nos refletir acerca do peso e construção histórica do lugar ocupado na sociedade pelas mulheres negras e brancas e na transversalidade de gênero raça/etnia no campo da saúde reprodutiva.
